How to Detangle Hair Without Unnecessary Breakage
Detangling should remove knots without turning wash day into a tug of war.
The goal is not to get through the hair as quickly as possible. It is to reduce unnecessary tension while working through tangles in a controlled way.
Work with slip
Trying to force through dry, resistant hair can create more friction. Detangle when your routine provides enough moisture and slip for strands to move past one another more easily.
Use sections
Dividing the hair into manageable sections gives you more control. It also helps prevent already detangled hair from becoming tangled again while you work.
Start at the ends
Begin near the ends and gradually work upward instead of pulling from the root through every knot. Hold the section above the area you are detangling when possible to reduce tension on the scalp.
Choose tools intentionally
Fingers, wide tooth combs, and detangling brushes can all have a place depending on your hair. The right tool should move through the hair without requiring excessive force.
Do not rush
If a knot is not moving, stop and work through it instead of repeatedly pulling harder. Patience during detangling can help preserve the length you have worked to retain.
At HBH Professional, manageability is part of foundational hair care. A good routine should make detangling easier, not turn it into another source of damage.
