How to Care for Your Hair Before and After Extensions
Extensions can change your style, but the health of your natural hair still depends on the foundation underneath.
Before installation
Begin with clean, conditioned, detangled hair. Address excessive buildup before the installation and make sure the hair is hydrated without being overloaded with heavy products.
Be mindful of tension
Comfort matters. An installation should be secure without relying on unnecessary pulling at the scalp or hairline. Speak up when something feels excessively tight.
Care for the scalp while wearing extensions
Keep the scalp accessible when possible and maintain a routine that accounts for sweat, oil, and product residue. Avoid using heavy layers simply because the natural hair is less visible.
Protect exposed hair
If heat is used on leave out or other exposed sections, use appropriate heat protection and limit repeated high temperature styling. The exposed hair should not have to absorb all the daily manipulation.
After removal
Do not rush straight into aggressive detangling. Shed hairs that were retained during the style can make the hair appear more tangled than usual. Work in sections, detangle patiently, then cleanse and condition thoroughly.
Give the hair what it needs
After takedown, assess softness, strength, scalp condition, and buildup before choosing treatments. Your next step should respond to the condition of the hair rather than follow a rigid routine.
HBH Professional believes extensions and healthy hair care can work together when the foundation remains the priority.
